How long does it take at the California DMV if you just walk in and?

Wait times if you do not have an appointment varies city to city and by the day of the week. I drive by the DMV in my city several times a month, and have noticed that Wednesdays seem to have fewer people standing in line outside the building. I GOOGLED which is the best day, and it confirms that Wednesday would be the best day, as Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays are the busiest. Also, some offices are open on Saturdays, and they tend to be busy also. A good strategy if you do not have an appointment is to get to the office at least an hour before it is set to open, as you may find it easier to find parking. You may still find yourself waiting in a line, but at least you will be served before the end of the day. If you do not like being in line with strangers at a business before opening, you may want to bring a friend. Go to the DMV website to get a checklist concerning required documents if you intend to get a real ID. I renewed my license back in December of 2018, and all of the documentation listed was correct. I have no knowledge of any changes that may have been made since then. If you are a veteran, and want veteran to be on your license, you will have to go to the nearest State Veterans Services Office with your DD214That will take about an hour, but you have to do that before you go to DMV. In my case, I was able to make an appointment, and I was in and out in less than one hour. Bring plenty of drinking water and dont lose your place in line until you get a now serving number. Good Luck.
